A Story About Legal Immigration

By a Marine Corps Veteran, Retired Correctional Lieutenant, and Oath Keeper

We are a nation of laws, a Constitutional Republic! As such we already have immigration laws. I know this because of my beautiful wife. She and her family came here legally from the Philippines.

In 1966 after graduating from nursing school in the Philippines, my wife’s oldest sister and two other young women were sponsored by a hospital to come here as nurses. They did and found a small apartment within walking distance of their work. They did not buy cars or fancy clothes but all worked hard and took all the overtime that was available, for the sole purpose of sending money home to better their respective families.

In the case of my wife’s family the decision was made that the ten remaining siblings would all go to college for the chance to come to America, the land of milk and honey. The other two nurses were doing the exact same thing. It would be ten years before the first family members would come and one was my wife.

This was an arduous task as education was but one condition. There were numerous health and good standing requirements as well as the requirement to be sponsored by a United States citizen. My wife and another sister came here with nothing but their clothes and determination to work hard for the betterment of the remaining family members. Both of these ladies had to leave their children behind in an effort to create a better life. It would be two years before they would see their children again.

Even though both women had college educations, the educational requirements were different between the two countries. My wife and her sister cleaned houses, raked leaves, cleaned yards, and any other legal work that they could do so that they could go back to college and make up any educational requirements to better their lot.

They lived in a one bedroom apartment to save money. Then two years later their father along with their two children came. He was 72 at the time and came on a work visa. He secured a job with the county on a tree planting crew. He kept this job for fifteen years. Shortly after his arrival all that were here decided to become United States citizens. They studied, applied, were accepted, tested and sworn in.

Now there were four adults and two children living in a one bedroom apartment. Because everyone was working they decided that shifts had to be changed in order to provide for the children. Everyone was working every minute of overtime available to create a semblance of wealth. Some was sent home to provide for the rest and the remaining was banked for the future.

Three years passed and my wife and her older sister decided to buy a house in order to provide space for the family. They wrote a check and bought a home. Then more came and all went to work. My wife’s older brother came here with his wife and two young boys and was unable to secure a job, so he enlisted in the Army and made a career of it. His younger brother seeing this also joined the Army but after four years he left active duty and transferred to the National Guard. He also worked and eventually became a postman.

A second home was purchased and it was one block from the first. Then all came here and everyone became productive United States citizens. In total with the children there were 23 that came.

Not one of my wife’s family members, at any time, accepted or requested any aid, welfare or any handout of any kind. They are very proud of this fact.

Everyone can remember where they were on 9/11. As I watched the events unfold and I was getting ready for work as a Correctional Sergeant, my statement to my wife was, “This is the greatest nation on earth.” She said to me, “Yes it is but you don’t understand!” She continued to say that since I was born here I really had no idea. That she and her family, if they had stayed in the Philippines, would have never had to opportunity or great life that they enjoy. In America if you are willing to work hard that you can achieve your dreams.

My wife is very vocal on immigration. She believes in it as she and her entire family have prospered because of it. However she thinks and states that it is not only illegal, but extremely unfair, to allow any illegal to stay and reap benefits from taxpayers. We already have a path to citizenship that is legal.

Even though our friends on the left use buzzwords like undocumented, amnesty, and a path to citizenship, that does not change the fact that we are being overwhelmed by this burden. Despite what some may think, this is nothing more than a usurpation of our laws by giving illegals citizenship in order to buy Democrat votes.

Either we have laws or we don’t.

  1. America is lost! The comments in the article reflect what I believe are the views of most Americans with respect for the country and the personal ideals that made it great. Unfortunately, Thomas Jefferson was correct in his assessment about the fall of democracies as well. Whenever people are able to vote themselves benefits from a democracy, eventually they will become corrupt and lose the ideals that made us great and we will be doomed to fall into history’s place as a great idea that ran it’s course and became defunct. I am very sad at this prospect and feel badly for all Americans who will still have to live here when the American ideal is crushed.

  2. The immigrants in this story are, and should be, very proud of their accomplishment. I welcome them as being US citizens of my country! It has been my opinion, and my desire for many years that the people of the USA, including those in the government especially, learn the difference between an immigrant and a migrant. They keep lumping them together, slapping our great legal immigrants in the face. Most of the rest of the world uses the terms correctly and I fail to understand why we of the USA don’t. Must be the Socialist Enemedia’s fault! Well, we always have to blame someone for everything, don’t we?

An immigrant has been through our immigration procedures, assimilated into our culture, respects our borders, language and culture, and believes in the so-called American Dream. I say so-called, because the term American, although legal and widely accepted as meaning a US citizen, the term US citizen is much more specific, because only about one-third of all Americans actually live in the USA. America actually covers two continents and has 34 American countries, of which the USA is just one of; it is reflected in USA, or United States OF America, so my preference is being called a US citizen rather than just an American. That is my opinion and desire, and it may not be the same as yours, and I’m not saying your opinion, whatever it is, is wrong.

I digressed. Now, back to being an immigrant or a migrant. I explained what an immigrant is above, and it is not the same as a migrant. Migrants can be legal, temporarily, and become immigrants when going through immigration processes and becoming legal citizens of the USA, with all benefits and responsibilities that come with that status. On the other hand, MOST migrants are not immigrants, nor do they intend to become immigrants; they are illegal aliens, or illegal migrants, if they entered the country illegally, overstayed their temporary authorization time limits, or just go into hiding and work illegally. They are not “undocumented immigrants” they are criminals. First time migrants entering illegally are committing a misdemeanor. If caught and deported, and they return a second time they are committing a felony. These illegal aliens have no rights to any benefits nor any other goodies from the Democrats in government! We have deportation laws and procedures in place to handle about any situation that comes up and they shouldn’t have to commit some heinous crime to warrant deportation or incarceration. I’m not much for extended incarceration since it costs a lot of tax dollars to keep them alive and locked up; either fully identify and record them and deport them, or if a rape or murder charge is proven against them, terminate them.

One of the bastard situations that is being debated at this time is the DACA people, and their legal status. They came here under President Obama’s questionable authorization, which could make them legal. But if President Trump revokes Obama’s Executive Order, does this make them illegal, since they were admitted as legal at the time? Great question! IMHO, they are illegal aliens, because again IMHO Obama was also an illegal alien and not Constitutionally eligible to be President in the first place, which negates every Executive Order that he penned! It may not be their fault they entered the country, true, but it certainly was not my fault, so I shouldn’t have to support 1.8 Million refugees, legal or not. If Democrats want them for increasing their voting base, then let the Democrats pay for them without taxpayer money!

As you may have guessed, I don’t like illegal migration very much. I believe we should put an immediate halt to it, as well as drug running, human trafficking, and any other illegal entry to my country. We have a legal path to citizenship already, and that debate is moot. I believe we should call a spade a spade, rather than using softening euphemisms the Democrats prefer to mask their subversion; “undocumented” anything is Progressive BS agitprop that translates directly to “illegal,” so use “illegal,” the proper term!

Call an illegal alien an illegal alien, and quit referring to them as illegal immigrants, which they are not! As far as I have determine, there are only two categories of people we could call “illegal immigrants,” that being someone who is a legal immigrant and has committed a relevant crime that violated their Oath of Allegiance to the USA, or a Muslim who, because of their required steadfast religious commitment to Islam and Allah, is not permitted by their Qur’an to swear allegiance to anything else, and they had to lie to swear to uphold the Oath of Allegiance to the USA in front of a high ranking Federal representative, which made it a Federal crime! Of course, swearing on a Qur’an would be a definite red flag in a majority Christian country!

Well, that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it. I am a veteran and a patriot, as well as a member of Oath Keepers, and I welcome any good person that wishes to join my country as a legal immigrant. The people of this great story have my best wishes for success in my country! Illegal migrants be damned and deported! I hope I haven’t offended too many people with my lack of political correctness. If I have, well, you know how we “deplorables” talk, and it ain’t like a bunch of Donkey Jockey Democrats!

    1. While I agree with much that you have said, …

“They came here under President Obama’s questionable authorization, which could make them legal. But if President Trump revokes Obama’s Executive Order, does this make them illegal, since they were admitted as legal at the time?”

Presidential Impersonator Obama is my term for him, with treason on the parts of all who assisted him into office, and those who SERVE WITHIN our government that did NOT require his removal. Those in enforcement that are still carrying out his “directives” are traitors, and when those orders are implemented against the American people it then becomes *Terrorism being committed by all involved at all levels.

BTW, NO US President can make any type of legislation that is lawful and binding on the American people except Treaties, and only then with 2/3rds of the Senate. Executive Orders are directives to those who serve within the executive branch at all levels as to HOW, WHEN, WHO, ETC they are to carry out their duties.

“Call an illegal alien an illegal alien, and quit referring to them as illegal immigrants, which they are not!”

True. But when they have been informed that they are NOT welcome to come here illegally and still persist, even – as now – openly persist, it becomes an Invasion.

“…, there are only two categories of people we could call “illegal immigrants,” that being someone who is a legal immigrant and has committed a relevant crime that violated their Oath of Allegiance to the USA, or a Muslim who, because of their required steadfast religious commitment to Islam and Allah, is not permitted by their Qur’an to swear allegiance to anything else, and they had to lie to swear to uphold the Oath of Allegiance to the USA in front of a high ranking Federal representative, which made it a Federal crime! Of course, swearing on a Qur’an would be a definite red flag in a majority Christian country!”

      Exactly!

It is nice to read the words of an informed citizen and Veteran. Thank you for your service to our country by bothering to be informed. That seems to be harder for most people here, yet it does not actually involve much more then reading the US Constitution and their own state’s Constitution

  3. Our Republic was foundered, framed and formed, upon our fair and balanced Rule of Law.
In the years 2009-2016, those same laws were disparaged and fraught with disillusion.
President trump, came on board as our nations Leader, and is doing his utmost, though against all odds and defamation, he is accomplishing his campaign promises to RIGHT our NATION. The President, like most of the citizens of America, know to the story of The Sneaky Snake, and as spring is upon us, we need to support Our President, and BUILD THE WALL, THEN DETERMINE that only the best of Lawful entries of Foreigner’s, will enter our Republic.
Americas next important priority, is to Have the Legislative and Judicial Breaches of Our Republic,.to UNIFY, and APPLY the present laws, or if needed.. make improvements in the law, in the same manner and discernment as our founders, with prayer and deliberation,

  4. Most excellent article! Your wife’s family are the EXACT citizens & Patriots NEEDED in our country today. They have a Legacy that they CHERISH. There is truth in the fact that “we appreciate those things MORE that we work hard for.”
