Frank Gaffney: North Korea Could Take Out Entire U.S. Electrical Power Grid

On Wednesday’s Breitbart News Daily, Center for Security Policy President Frank Gaffney joined SiriusXM host Alex Marlow to discuss dictator Kim Jong-un’s unwelcome contribution to this year’s Fourth of July fireworks: the test launch of what may be North Korea’s first true intercontinental ballistic missile.

“It’s unprecedented in the sense that it’s performed the feat of demonstrating the capacity to deliver a payload over longer range than ever before,” Gaffney said. “This missile flew for about 40 minutes. In this particular case, they chose to fly it almost directly straight up, and then pretty much straight back down.

“It went to about 2100 kilometers, we’re told, perhaps somewhat longer. The length of time and the amount of distance covered suggest that if the trajectory were flatter, it would reach intercontinental ranges, at least to Alaska and perhaps beyond in the continental United States.”

“In any event, what it really indicates is that this is a regime that intends to continue to refine, and perfect, and expand the capacity to threaten the United States, which is bad enough even without this long-range missile,” he continued.

“As we’ve discussed before, one of the things that worries me the most about the North Koreans is they have been beavering away at, it appears, a technique called electromagnetic pulse attacks.”

Gaffney explained that such attacks do not require precision targeting, miniaturized nuclear warheads, or reentry shielding, which seem to be areas where North Korean technology remains lacking. Instead, an EMP attack could be carried out with “a single nuclear weapon, perhaps not even a very sophisticated one” detonated in orbit somewhere over North America.

“They could conceivably take down the electric grid of the United States, and with it our country,” he warned. “That’s the worrying threat to me, irrespective of the length of the missile’s range.”

“We’re being encouraged to believe they haven’t figured out how to miniaturize nuclear weapons, or how to make them with these kinds of ballistic missile delivery systems. If that’s true—and I’m suspicious.

“I must say, because they’ve been working hard at it for a long time, with a lot of help from former Soviet and Russian engineers, as well as probably Chinese and I would guess Iranians, for that matter,” Gaffney observed.

“Either way, again, even if they don’t have the capacity to put a small package in a re-entry vehicle capable of withstanding the heat of coming back into the atmosphere, by simply putting a fairly crude nuclear weapon on a satellite—which they have I believe now two orbiting the Earth, including overflying this country regularly—at about the optimal altitude for one of these so-called EMP electromagnetic pulse attacks.

“They’re already in a position, I think, to threaten mortal damage to this country,” he judged.

Gaffney called it a bitter lesson of history that “problems like this, threats, generally don’t get attenuated by the passage of time—they tend to become more and more serious.”

  1. ““They could conceivably take down the electric grid of the United States, and with it our country,” he warned.”

Second, unless the Congress declares war – and it IS the only body that has that Lawful authority – the people of the USA will NOT be going to war with Korea. Any soldier that obeys those UNLAWFUL orders to do so are then working AGAINST our legitimate government and assisting in the destruction of our nation. Any person that orders to implement this without a declaration of War from the Congress must be charged and arrested, start with the felony of breaking their Oath, plus Perjury.

Understand, that is different IF we are actually attacked, though, again, it was “our” military elite and the CIA who provoked this. It is past time to rein in those who run our military, and those who contract with our military, all who have vested interest and much money to make if they can get Americans to die, get maimed, etc or do those things to the foreign nation we will have attacked.

You are in the military for various reasons, but one must be to defend your country from its enemies – DOMESTIC and foreign. Read the US Constitution, know who has LEGITIMATE authority in our nation, then only obey constitutional orders as is required by the Oath you take. Understand that the Oath is NOT to a person, or office, or branch (or it is not the lawful Oath required), but to the US Constitution first and foremost before any person of any rank.

James Madison: “The power to declare war, including the power of judging the causes of war, is fully and exclusively vested in the legislature … the executive has no right, in any case, to decide the question, whether there is or is not cause for declaring war.”

George Washington: “The constitution vests the power of declaring war in Congress; therefore no offensive expedition of importance can be undertaken until after they shall have deliberated upon the subject and authorized such a measure.”

James Madison: “In time of actual war, great discretionary powers are constantly given to the Executive Magistrate. Constant apprehension of War, has the same tendency to render the head too large for the body. A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty. The means of defence against foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home. Among the Romans it was a standing maxim to excite a war, whenever a revolt was apprehended. Throughout all Europe, the armies kept up under the pretext of defending, have enslaved the people.”

James Madison: “Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied: and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force, of the people. The same malignant aspect in republicanism may be traced in the inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war, and in the degeneracy of manners and of morals, engendered by both. No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.

    J. Reuben Clark: “God provided that in this land of liberty, our political allegiance shall run NOT to individuals, that is, to government officials, no matter how great or how small they may be. Under His plan our allegiance and the only allegiance we owe as citizens or denizens of the United States, runs to our inspired Constitution which God himself set up. So runs the oath of office of those who participate in government. A certain loyalty we do owe to the office which a man holds, but even here we owe just by reason of our citizenship, no loyalty to the man himself. In other countries it is to the individual that allegiance runs. This principle of allegiance to the Constitution is basic to our freedom. It is one of the great principles that distinguishes this “land of liberty” from other countries”. (caps mine)

Remember they can only destroy our nation from within if the enforcers – domestic and military – “just follow orders” and “just do their jobs”. The Oath, the US Constitution, and America requires more from you then that in order to have and keep a free and independent nation.

    1. HEAR, HEAR Cal! And as Trump just proclaimed to the G20 and the world. The Domestic enemy is our greatest at the present moment!

  2. If you want to get a realistic idea of what life might be like after an EMP, read William Forstchen’s trilogy, One Second After, One Year After, and The Final Day.

  3. Law of squares?

An EMP is subject to the same laws that govern radio transmission.

This is fear porn at it’s best. Could damage be done? Yes. But the entire US power grid, gimme a break.

North Korea has no Rothschild central bank, and is sitting on a little discussed cache of over 10 trillion in minerals.

Oh, yeah, then there is the little problem with retaliation. I’m sure Raytheon could level Pyongyang for far less money than we spent on the CIA operations to destabilize Syria and the international media smear campaign against Assad.

That’s my 2 cents…er…my 2/100’s of one federal reserve note. But that’s not worth much.

  4. There are 5 power grids, not 1. Effective radius of EMP effect limited to no more than 4000 miles diameter circle. Effective energy dispersable into atmosphere limited by field strength- anywhere it was raining will have working electronics. Diesel systems will mostly work. Take care.

  5. I would rather see our government in partnership with the private sector do everything humanly possible to avoid destruction of part or all of our grid rather than look back in hindsight when it’s too late.
