  1. Dowels (stick with hole drilled in middle) at Walmart and art supplies stores. I remember seeing metal oil can spout with a sharp V shape end. After boring a hole maybe these will work. Need to be able to identify which trees. I know pine for sure. Oak I think, maple not sure. Just saw my first pecan trees last year. Never really looked.
