IN MY VIEW: Get involved, or explain why you won’t

by Mark Lytle

As a leader for a local chapter of Oath Keepers, I have the opportunity to engage in conversations with complete strangers who inquire about our organization. Generally, I am approached by the more conservative crowd, because many I have met on the left have a preconceived notion that at any moment I may fly off the handle and begin committing hate crimes, or worse, the dreaded “thought crimes.”

Sadly, this is what discussion of ideas has boiled down to in this country. A talking head from the media, a politician, or 501(c3) organization will deliver an opinion, and suddenly the engines of group-think are fired up, and no discussion transpires. The only thing that is left to decide is how loud the “shouting down” by the thought police should be.

Yet many people are surprised to find out that I have served my country and community for over 20 years and that I have developed great disdain for the Republican/Democrat dichotomy. I am against many of our train wreck foreign and domestic policies from our current and previous administrations. I am an ardent supporter of EVERY amendment in the Bill of Rights. I am against corporate welfare/bailouts/”too big to fail” policies, and I am Jewish.

This generally results in an audible sizzling of their circuit board, because many have been programed to accept ALL of the conservative argument, or ALL of the liberal argument. After all, it is an apostasy in our controlled speech environment to speak out against corporate corruption as a “conservative” or carry a concealed firearm if you are “liberal.”

Often times, the person I am speaking with say the things my organization represents makes sense, and then I hear it:  “But I don’t want to get on some list”. This mysterious “list” hearkens back to images of WWII Germany, with jack-booted thugs rounding up Jews, gypsies, ethnic minorities, political enemies, homosexuals and those deemed genetically defective.

If you are concerned that you are going to be persecuted by tyrannical thugs because you exercise your constitutionally protected rights, it should be the bugle call that causes you to stand up and become involved in changing things.

I came to the conclusion that list or no list, I could no longer sit by and watch our nation continue down this path of destruction. This is not an issue of right vs. left, but an issue of maintaining complete control of the citizenry. It was a matter of sowing as much political, racial and religious tension as possible so we are too busy fighting each other and are kept blinded to the rape of our country by many politicians who have been bought and paid for to represent some nefarious interest.

I thought about what I would tell my children when they asked me what I did to stop the destruction of their civil liberties. Would I tell them that I remained silent because I didn’t want to risk losing a government pension, or would I tell them that I did everything I possibly could to prevent our leaders from driving our nation off a cliff? Would I have to tell them that during my time it was actually acceptable to have a different opinion, and furthermore express that opinion without being tarred, feathered and persecuted for a “thought crime”?

I decided that I would not be intimidated by fears of being put on a list. I would not be fearful of being tarred, feathered and hung out for public display for expressing a counter viewpoint. I would not participate in the left/right, Democrat/ Republican, gay/straight, Christian/Jewish, black/white, terrorism/war dichotomy any longer. I owe it to my my children to stand up and defend their rights, regardless of being personally attacked. At the end of the day, no matter what happens, I can look them dead in the eye and tell them that I did all I could to ensure they could grow up in a truly free nation.

To hell with intimidation and “lists.” Turn off the television, stand up, speak out, and get involved. If you don’t, be ready to explain to your children that your fantasy football bracket, or obsession with your Facebook friend accumulation was more of a priority than ensuring they inherited free and stable nation.

  1. Outstanding work, Mark! You speak reasons so similar to many of us for joining and continuing to be an Oath Keeper.

Do you mind if I copy all of this, including your name, attach my name and number for local Oath Keeper meetings, and submit it to our local paper?

    1. Frank I have no issue with that (I am the author). This was a whittled down version of the original piece due to the length requirements of our newspaper. If you want the original version you can find it at: There are some other writings you may find interesting on there as well.

To the monitors at the the SPLC: You now have a new website to monitor and put on your 1st Amendment hit list……isn’t that exciting!

      1. By “getting involved to change things” do you mean vote for Trump? Given that voting machines are electronic and have no real paper trail there really is no point in voting. The electoral college also means your vote really doesn’t matter because they are not required to vote for the popular candidate. Both candidates are frauds, and voting in local elections doesn’t seem to have any effect either. The only real way to make change is civil disobedience backed by well armed individuals willing to stand their ground. Words at this pinot have no effect. Your magic paper document is dead and has been for some time. The constitution is not what grants me my rights, I DO! Push your document all you want, it is what got us here in the first place it created the government YOU worship. If you really stand for the constitution than you stand for oppressive governance. The constitution is a binding contract I never agreed to, and will never agree to. And to force that contract on others is just as totalitarian as the government/ society that upholds it.

      2. Whoa, Jeff, slow down, taste some of the “pinot” that you mentioned in the middle of the above rant.
We are Oath Keepers sworn to protect the principles of law in the document that –you’re right, doesn’t grant but protects our rights. We won’t push it or worship it, just keeping it polished and Out Front. Many a person disregards it until they begin a life’s study of the law.

      3. I’m just tired of the crap Frank, I know it’s not marks fault. But at the same time I don’t like being told that I need to explain to my kids why I have up on that system you call law. Oathkeepers are not doing much other than talking and protecting mine’s. If a constitutional convention was held tomorrow, and it was held for the purpose of repealing the second amendment. If the vote passed to repeal it than you would be required by your “oath” to surrender your fire arms. At what POINT is enough, enough? I personally will not pay one more raise in taxes. I will not abide by one more arbitrary law passed by assholes that don’t represent me. I will not sacrifice anymore of my freedoms. That document doesn’t protect squat. All the president has to do is declare a state of emergency and suspend the constitution. If the president can at his whim determine what is or isn’t an emergency and suspend the constitution than that document might as well not exist at all.

      4. Hold the line, Bros! Help us spread the word about revitalizing the Constitutionally required “Militia of the several States”. Education is the foundation which must be in place before action is taken. Please visit Dr. Edwin Vieira’s page here at the Oath Keepers Academy.

Then get your copy and share this book with all your friends, because all of our solutions begin first in our minds. The book to get and read carefully is:

Constitutional Homeland Security: Part One: The Nation In Arms”.

        On page 12 he states:

“…the doctrine of “emergency powers runs afoul of America’s Constitution… Anyone who bothers to read the Constitution will see that it:

        Delegates to the General Government as a whole – or to Congress, the President, or the Supreme Court separately – no “emergency powers” under that rubric;

        Delegates neither powers that only an “emergency” can call into existence, nor powers that may be exercised only in an “emergency”;

Delegates no power even to declare that an “emergency” exists; and, perhaps most decisively of all,

Does not even employ the word “emergency”, let alone define it as a legal principle relevant to any part of “the supreme Law of the Land”.

If enough Americans are awakened to the fact that no stupid president can arbitrarily proclaim some “national emergency”, then the president can’t get away with that one.

  2. Very nice Mark. I started having visions of moving to Arizona. I wish I could set my thoughts to words with that kind of style.

  3. Mark is my younger brother. I taught him everything he knows. *****I WISH***** Really though, Mark is a good friend of mine and he makes me proud. His life defines honor. What he does is what all LEOs and military should do. Stand up in the face of tyranny on your job. Take the hit for liberty. FE in reality what you claim you are. Let it show and let it shine in your life. Maybe this exposure will inspire him to write an article about border operations. He is in a position to lay it all out. He has already placed himself in the danger zone so–What the heck.

  4. Bravo Mark! So beautifully stated and accurate as could be on every point you made. I would love to follow Frank’s idea and post your letter with our Chapter’s contact and meeting info as well. This will help motivate people…great job!

  5. great article Mark! How big is your town and how much circulation does your paper get? I used to write in to letters to the editor, I live in Spokane, WA. It used to be a great town, but just in the last five years it is like a fog of idiocy has fallen here. I would like to pack my bags and move east into ID. or MT. if I could afford it.

    1. Bill

I grew up in Sokkane, lived there over forty years, great town, great people. Then the powers-to-be went against a vote by the people and instigated EXPO-74, and everything began changing, liberals arrived and Rinos found their way to office. Suggest you vacate the county or move to ID or MT where making a stand is still possible.

  6. It’s about 25k-30k, so not a big town. You should move to Arizona, we actually have people that enjoy their civil liberties down here.

  7. Hey Elias where were you when they signed the patriot act which gave the president the power to do these things. You can’t interpret the constitution in your own way.

    1. Jeff,
May I jump in here and say…you just don’t get it, do you? The ‘Patriot Act’ is an unconstitutional act. If you need details, here’s one [there are many] link- .
Our federal, state, county, and local governments have over 200 years experience in the passage of unconstitutional laws, acts, and rules that are in direct violation of the U.S. Constitution.
President John Adams, one of the signers of our U.S. Constitution, signed into law the Sedition Act in 1798 which in part “prohibited public opposition to the government. Fines and imprisonment could be used against those who “write, print, utter, or publish . . . any false, scandalous and malicious writing” against the government”. This was clearly a violation of the individual protections under the first amendment of the Constitution. And this happened only 8 years after our U.S. Constitution was ratified!!
Or the Dread Scott decision by our U.S. Supreme Court… “in which the U.S. Supreme Court on March 6, 1857, ruled (7–2) that a slave (Dred Scott) who had resided in a free state and territory (where slavery was prohibited) was not thereby entitled to his freedom”. Here we have the Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court telling us that a citizen of this country was, in fact, not a citizen, and not entitled to the protections of our Constitution. It took the ratification of the 13th amendment to change that ruling.
Or on a more local level, how about the multitude of gun laws which infringe on our Constitutional right to keep and bear arms?
The point is, this has been going on since the beginning our country and we have allowed it to happen. The Patriot Act is just one more.
The Constitution is the supreme law of the land [Article 6]. Neither the President, the Supreme Court, nor your city council can change it. The Congress can’t change it either unless two thirds of both houses specifically allow it. Just because Congress passes an ‘act’ or a ‘law’ doesn’t make that act/law constitutional. Even the Supreme Court can’t make it ‘Constitutional’, if it obviously isn’t.
And if it is not Constitutional, it is not law.
You don’t have to be a politician, judge, or lawyer to interpret the U.S. Constitution. Anyone with a basic understanding of the english language can do so. You just have to read and comprehend it.

      1. This quote from Kris Anne Hall, KrisAnneHall.Com- “The federal Govt. is nothing but a schoolyard bully. All bark and no bite. All their power is exerted upon the individual. That strikes fear in the masses. But if the people in the community stood by the individual, then the federal govt. would have no power at all. They rely on the fear they invoke in the hearts of the people”.

      2. Edit – Should read…’President John Adams, one of the signers of our Declaration of Independence….’
My bad. An epic failure to proof read.

    2. Well, my thanks go to SheepDog for already saving me some time in answering you.
The magnitude of the arrogant conceit of our present-day government is beyond description. When government concocts and passes something as blatantly un-Constitutional as the USA-PATRIOT ACT all I can do is laugh at their silliness. I do not recognize that law, as it is merely another example of lawlessness because its very nature violates the purpose of the Constitution. Will they continue to pass such silliness? Yes — as long as the sheeple remain comfortably fed and satiate. But the course this tyranny is taking shall soon enough run into the wall of futility because of one principle, and that principle is that when government engenders more dependency upon government than support for government, government will run out of money to fund its promised entitlements. That is when the proverbial S shall HTF. It’s an old addage, that socialism doesn’t work because sooner or later the state runs out of other people’s money. So I say let them have their orgy of tyranny, and the sooner the better. When enough people are cold, wet, tired, hungry and homeless we might see a return in the public perception to the principles of individual responsibility and the freedom which individual responsibility produces.
I will remind you of what some are saying while holding their breath — all governments today are servants and assets for the globalizing socialist elite who feel entitled to structure, organize, and rule this world through a centralized one-world government such as the United Nations. What that shows me is that it is plain out stupid to place any faith in government, any government, all governments whatsoever. I’ve admitted to myself that we’ve lost our “America”. What remains for each of us is to prepare, to figure some sort of survival plan, and ride out the storm as the American people are reorganized into a post-freedom government-controlled social order which will continue to expend an exaggerated and accelerated quantity of fiat dollars until their bluff is called and the system implodes. As I told the History Channel a couple of years ago, about all we can do is for “Each One Teach One” the principles of freedom, so that even under a totalitarian police state the beauties of individual freedom can remain underground with a hope, slim as it may be, of someday re-surfacing from the ruins the globalists shall leave in their wake.

I woke up to this about sixteen years ago, closed my business, and moved to the northwest mountain redoubt to get as far away from the Cities of Man as I could, while I still could. As an old beatnik and counter-culture hippy, I recall a song by Neil Young in which he laments, “Are you ready for the country? Because it’s time to go.” I also recall John Prine’s admonition to “blow up your tv, move to the country….

So my answer is to help as many people as I can to wake up to what’s happening to our way of life, who is doing that to us, and the sheer beauty in the knowledge that if enough of us simply turn our backs, deny any validity to their precious little statutes and codes which violate the Constitution, and walk away from the General government in WDC and return to being citizens of our respective States, where governmental evils are much more localized and therefore are much more controllable, we may yet return to the freedoms our past once enjoyed. If we turn our backs on the concentrated Federal government and quit supporting it, it will fall of its own dead weight. I learned that from Carl Watner and Wendy McElroy, co-founders of the modern Voluntaryist movement. That is what I say to the public mind every way I can, every day. It is how I fight their MindWar. It’s all my conscience will permit me to do — teach; spread the word; offer a more gentle awakening by showing the correct relationship of a sovereign soul to any man-made government.

The Patriot Act does not exist in reality. You and I know that, but the government which wanted to use it for sinister purposes does not know it. Today’s government thinks anything it does is the reflection of the Author of this Universe. They are hopelessly lost, are consumed with the psychic arrogance of an ill fantasy, and actually believe their own projected fantasy. I have unplugged myself from that madness. I’m just going to tell people what I’ve learned and hope they will spread the word. Meanwhile, I’m way out in the woods of Montana getting ready to hopefully ride out the coming storm as best as an old man can. I’ll die a free man, a sovereign soul who knows governmental sin when I see it and will not comply, will not consent, will not contribute to it. I’d rather die with that mindset than live as a slave.
Best wishes to you, however you decide to respond to tyranny.

  8. Unfortunately they are willing to use drones and large ordinance on us if mass insurrection happens. How do you stop a delusional government backed buy a delusional society? The answer is to seek independence from it and a willingness to fight for that independence. Same way the the constitution was written in defiance of the king. The problem with that is a republic falls appart just as easily as all other forms of government. A new system must be created. One that is devoid of centralized government. That process will not involve the constitution of the United States or it’s “legal process.

    1. You are not addressing Mark’s specific points in his article, that overall was intended to keep the rest of the membership on-track with the current goals of Oath Keepers. You are a distraction from all of this.

I doubt you are an active member of OKers. I will ask the editor to reject your future messages on this article.

      1. Thanks Frank. I understand your assessment and your request, but I will let his posts stand for two reasons:
        1. He is not violating our terms of agreement; and
        2. Our comments sections under articles are open to the general public. No one needs to be a dues-paying member to post comments here.

It would be nice if he could/would get a clue and climb down off of his limited perception, but he may need more life-experience to get the point we’re trying to reveal to him. Maybe in time he’ll see the bigger picture, so let’s be nice to him, eh? At least he’s reading here, so that’s a good sign imo.

  9. All 3 branches of government are oligarchic, remember the Constitution was designed to prevent oligarchy and provide a broad base middle class. What you don’t seem to know is that there has been amendments added to which allows this. Declaring ” I am an ardent supporter of EVERY amendment ” shows your ignorance. Just like the Marine oath keeper have a confederate plate on his truck, CSA constitution allowed oligarchy and NO middle class or infrastructure. So therefore I will never join your organization. Good luck cause you need it

    1. Ironwood – OK. Let’s assume I’m ignorant. Which amendments [specifically] have been added that ‘allow’ our country to become an oligarchy?

      Oligarchy /ˈɑːləˌgɑɚki/ noun
      plural oligarchies
      Learner’s definition of OLIGARCHY

a : a country, business, etc., that is controlled by a small group of people
ex. Their nation is an oligarchy.
b : the people that control a country, business, etc.
ex. An oligarchy rules their nation.
c : government or control by a small group of people
ex. The corporation is ruled by oligarchy.
