Early reports indicated that “at least one man with an assault rifle had shot at police and shattered a cruiser window”. No officers were reported injured as of 10:30p.m.

At a later press conference it was learned that officers were in a police car in the area of the 2300 block of Winchester Street when they heard gunfire around 9:30 p.m.  Baltimore Police Media Relations Chief T.J. Smith said “They actually heard gunfire. When they heard this gunfire, they drove toward it at one of the apartment buildings on Winchester Street. They drove into the parking lot and they saw a man armed with an AR-15-style rifle, firing the weapon. He was firing that weapon and he turned that weapon toward officers and started firing the weapon toward officers and the officers returned fire,”

The armed man was struck at least once in the upper body. The suspect fled into an apartment building and was found on the second floor. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.  Police said the gun was found in a wooded area behind the apartment building.

  1. PLEASE stop using “their” made up terminology. “assault rifle” AR-15 pistol is what that looks like. A = Armalite & R = Rifle & 15 was the Model number 1958.

    1. FlajarHead – You are correct, it is an AR-15 pistol. The terminology you are concerned about is a quote from the police public affairs briefing. I’m not sure if it would be a good idea for us to not quote them verbatim. In general, I agree with you. We lost and the ban passed. The ban did not include ar-15 pistols, go figure.

  2. ” The suspect fled into an apartment building and was found on the second floor.” “Police said the gun was found in a wooded area behind the apartment building.”
Too little info. Did the suspect flee through or immediately near the ‘wooded area’ OR is the ‘wooded area’ within tossing range of the apartment?
