Letter to U.S. Military and Federal LEOs From 1st Sgt. Mack: “Do not become the very enemy that you swore to defend this nation against” in OR

(The below letter comes from an old American Army Airborne warrior, 1st Sgt. Mack (just “1st Sgt.” to us), who is very well respected by all here at Oath Keepers.  I asked him to write what he would want to say to active duty military and current serving federal LEOs (many of whom are military veterans) in regards to possible orders to “drop the hammer” on Ammon Bundy and his followers at the occupation of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Oregon.  This is what he wrote – Stewart Rhodes):

We would implore you, no we would beseech you, not to step over a line that there is no coming back across.  You must not allow yourselves to disregard your own moral values.

There is no job, no amount of money, no position that is worth risking the loss of one American citizens life if you choose to violate your oaths.

The American people are NOT terrorists, they are NOT insurgents, they are NOT the enemies from a foreign land, they are citizens, and as citizens they are GUARANTEED rights by the Constitution that you swore to uphold and defend.  Yes, they make mistakes, they make foolish decisions, they become frustrated and often feel they have lost their voice.

That does NOT make them enemies.  You, as military personnel and government employees have a Sworn Duty to uphold their rights and protect them.   And you have the ability to restore their voices, to ensure that they are heard.  You do not have the right, legal or otherwise, to silence them.  They have the right to freedom, liberty, and LIFE.

So again I ask that you stop and consider every consequence of any action that you may take going forward from this point.

Please stop and think what your answer would be when asked by your children, your parents, brother and sisters, or friends, “Why did you take part in action that was illegal, that led to the deaths of American citizens?”  Or “why did you allow yourselves to disregard the rights of those same people?”  Will you be able to look them in the eye? will you be able to merely say “I was just following orders?”  Because if you think you could, you do not belong in the position you are in.  And you should probably seek the advice of your family and friends NOW.

If you partake in any action that violates the Constitution, that leads to the death or destruction of American rights, liberties or lives, you will be held accountable by those same citizens. You have the ability to speak up for them,  I urge you to do so.

It is your Duty not to follow any order that is illegal.

Do not become the very enemy that you swore to defend this nation against, as you would be judged and treated just as that – an enemy of your own people.

1st Sgt.

US Army Ret.

  1. Hard hitting and to the point. Every soldier that reads this letter should reach into his/her soul and look in the mirror and ask themselves WHY they joined the military. The answer to that question laid alongside this letter should guide them well and result in the right answer. You are a great leader Top we are so blessed to have you.

  2. Great job Top, it boils down to one thing, their Oath! It boils down to either they stand with their fellow citizens which is family, friends and neighbor, those within in their churches and those their kids play sports with or they stand “against” them.

For the active duty, remember there are tens of millions of veterans who walked in your shoes, trained by the same system and people who trained you. Remember your Oaths, follow the Constitution and “lawful orders” and please do not stand against your families, friends and neighbors.

Your fellow citizens and veterans are your Allies!

  3. Amen Top. Guys and gals in uniform, if we cannot trust you to defend our liberty and the Constitution, what remedy do we have left to us but to defend it ourselves. We placed that duty in your hands; we the people. You are all smart people. Sort it out in your minds. If you are given the order to smoke these people and you move to carry out that order, you become the very enemy that I swore to defend against. Overwhelming force against who? People who have declared no hostile intent. That order would be totally unlawful and, deep in your hearts and souls, you know that to be true.

  4. Thank you brother for your support and defense of the patriots at the Harney County Resource Center.

  6. For those of you who value honor, duty, country and have sworn to uphold and defend, your decision should be a no brainer. NO I will not follow that illegal order.

You have been forewarned that there will be no more Free Waco’s. The American people are not your enemies. Don’t make them such! There are many of us out here who were once members of the same community that you now reside in, (Special Operations) we know your tactics and have experience using them too. Don’t make us use them against you and yours. When the time comes and it will come, join your American brothers, it is the honorable action, the only action that you can take.

  7. Remember that the Nazis that were tried for war crimes against humanity were not protected by claiming they “were just following orders”. First and foremost you have the duty to uphold the law of morality, followed by the supreme law of the land, the Constitution of the United States. At least when I joined the military 40 years ago it was made very clear to me that I did not have to follow orders that were illegal. The law and the government is not immune to our system of laws. My understanding is this important understanding is not made clear to modern day soldiers or police. This will not excuse those who turn against their own fellow citizens in times of civil conflict. I still hold the oath I took 40 years ago in the highest regard. The enemy of my fellow citizen is my enemy and an enemy of the state, following orders or not. I will stop those with extreme prejudice if they act against all morality and righteousness. Be warned that a time will soon come when many men will face this choice. Realize that you and your families will fall prey to such tyranny too. There is much evil and darkness in the halls of power. Strangely, much of it is but a remnant of the evil which created it, while that evil may have since long left this Earth. It’s shadows still occupy a strong hold on our institutions and many of high office who act in darkness are not even sure why they are committing their treasons. Our civilization is like a monster sized ship which takes a long time to change course and turn around. The course was laid long ago. The evil has been banished, yet the ship continues on. Stop and think, and maybe mankind can survive the horror which had been planned for millennia.
