Some Vets Demand ‘Gun Control’ in Spite of Oath

Just because you once served does not give you a right to betray your oath. Benedict Arnold by Hall, H. B., Artist (NARA record: 3123749) – U.S. National Archives and Records Administration

“As a Navy veteran, I know how America should implement gun control,” Shawn VanDiver writes in The Huffington Post. “As a former weapons instructor in the U.S. Navy, I own guns myself–and I want to keep them. However, I believe that our society is overflowing with lethal weapons and that we must take action to prevent more dead kids. “

His essay is actually a republishing of a screed he wrote last year for The Daily Beast, another left-leaning publication. And it’s probably good that he didn’t put any more work into it, as all he does is recycle the same tired old schemes other gun grabbers have thrown at us before:  Licensing of a right; required training to exercise it, and, of course,  “a modest tax to ammunition sales (think five to ten cents per round–a manageable amount).”

Obviously, VanDiver either doesn’t shoot all that much, or else he’s a man of means.  Curious, though, how often supposedly egalitarian “progressives” make things prohibitive for those on limited incomes, and particularly on black Americans. It’s actually reminiscent of another gun-grabber innovation, the Black Codes, designed to disarm via “facially neutral’ business or transaction taxes on handgun purchases.” And that goes hand-in-hand with Michael Bloomberg’s Everyplantation philosophy that cities need to disarm male minority members up to age 25.

VanDiver is another in a long line of veterans who seem to have taken a different pledge than Oath Keepers did. We’ve seen anti-gun vets who served and even saw action like Al Gore and John Kerry, and on the Republican side, the late Sen. John Chaffee and current Senator Mark Kirk. All of them swore an oath to the Constitution, and all embraced draconian citizen disarmament legislation in spite of the clear “shall not be infringed” proscription in the Bill of Rights.

Not to diminish their service, but they also need to be accountable for what they’ve done since reentering civilian life. And it’s harsh, but not out of line, to remind ourselves that at one time, one of America’s greatest military heroes, who proved his battlefield courage on several occasions, was a twice-wounded former patriot by the name of Benedict Arnold.

David Codrea blogs at The War on Guns: Notes from the Resistance (, and is a field editor/columnist for GUNS Magazine. Named “Journalist of the Year” in 2011 by the Second Amendment Foundation for his groundbreaking work on the “Fast and Furious” ATF “gunwalking” scandal, he is a frequent event speaker and guest on national radio and television programs.

  1. That would be good ,but even if they had gun control the bad guys would still have guns and or no one else will take my guns ,Disabled Viet Nam Vet

  2. Hey Benedict the only way to stop a bad man with a gun is a good one with a gun. Ask yourself this question if you were planning to rob an establishment which would you choose a place with legal signs saying No concealed carry or an establishment that welcomes them . Pretty obvious answer to anyone with any brains . The only gun control i believe in is the control I have when it is in my hands. Law abiding Citizens are not a problem they are the solution . If you can’t see that seek professional help

  4. I agree we need “gun control”, but we need it as the US Constitution requires.

You know, that those that serve within our governments are FORBIDDEN to create a permanent military or governmental professional law enforcement; but are REQUIRED to use the Militia which is the people.

They should not be, so they should not be armed because the US Military is to be called forth when needed, so that it cannot be used against the American people or impoverish the nation in its support. Of course that will tick off those that are within the Pentagon and those that make a PROFIT over our people being injured or murdered in wars of aggression selling arms to both sides – and yes I am including Obama in that via Fast and Furious, Benghazi, etc. They garnered themselves a lot of power and riches keeping Americans in war using whatever means they can to do so.

  5. Just because someone is a vet even a combat veteran does not mean they are a saint or right on everything. Some people were jerks in the service and are still jerks as civilians.

It goes beyond the oath; it is a disease of the mind to put ideological constraints on others without those same constraints being applied to themselves. That disease is the reason we throughout history are plagued with tyrants.

My view is none military government agencies should be under the same “controls” as our civilians. Otherwise, in the eventuality of progressive control, we civilians will have stones and sticks while armed agencies have super weapons. Show me where it is not gradually becoming such the case. We see the militarizing of our peace officers, we see multitudes of government agencies being militarized. Then we have jackasses like VanDiver who perpetrate and support such movement to totalitarian Marxism. “Show me the man, and I’ll show you the crime” – Lavrentiy Beria (Head of Joseph Stalin’s Secret Police)

First, being a free man and second an Air Force (or any branch served) veteran, I know how America should implement gun control: “shall not be infringed.” I own guns myself–and I want to keep them to defend myself and others from tyrannicals ; example VanDiver. Further, I need not any qualifier. Furthermore, I believe that our society is being brainwashed by leftist Marxists whose aim is to disarm and subsequently strip us of our God given rights. Typical progressive rhetoric is to throw in the dead children as does VanDiver.

A little research will probably uncover his support for “women’s rights” to murder their living fetuses; in direct contrast to his cause to saving the dead children remark. It demonstrates his hypocrisy as well as those the enemies of our freedoms he sleeps with.

It’s a black and white issue with no fence. People either see it clearly, or muddy the waters with “ya buts.” Our rights to live free are the same rights we have cherished since the dawn of man. Now is the time to not sit on any false fences.

Drop an unarmed VanDiver in the darkest streets with the highest crime rates in America, or any other gun ownership desert. Let him witness first hand what his gun control reaps. That would be the progressive cities with the greatest gun control and fear propaganda around gun ownership. Ask any of the 170 million dead victims in the 20th century murdered by “gun control.”

  7. Gun confiscation or those proponents of “gun control” are nothing short of traitors to our country and Constitutional Republic. A analogy would be: If the government passed laws that would abridge your right to speech. If before you spoke or wrote, a background check would be required, a permit issued, certain areas would be off limits, (speech free zones) if people are frightened or intimidated by your words, your right to speak or write would be terminated and you could be put in jeopardy of arrest and incarceration. Your permit to speak and write could be terminated by the government and unless and until your permit is returned, speech by you will be illegal. Raids by government agents possessing warrants issued by judges with erronious information of your home or business for perceived violations will occur on a regular basis. You and your family will be subjected to legal costs and attorney fees for violating the government ban on speech. By the way, this blog and website would be used to incarcerate those of us commenting because a permit would never be issued for this sort of expression. Tyranny starts slowly, filtering its way through time like a slow drip from ignored faucet. Over time the corrosion caused by this incessant drip becomes obvious but, will only stop when someone intercedes, removes the problem and repairs the faucet. Patriots have always been those who have repaired the faucet leak throughout time. MOLON LABE!

  8. As history has shown us, gun control only works to disarm those that do not intend to break the law in the first place. Once you open something up like this, you open the whole can not just part of it. And that goes for a lot of these issues. There is a reason for a scale in the symbol of justice. It has to be balanced for ALL, not just a few. Never will understand folks like this.

  9. Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
This is America, you have the right to cower in fear. I can’t make you honor your duty to protect yourself and other innocent people. Your natural right to self defense, is not granted by the Constitution, it is a fundamental law of nature. Only 3% of gun crime occurs with a legal firearm. What is courage? Action, in the face of fear, with mindful knowledge of the consequences. There is no guarantee of safety in our world. ” They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” – Ben Franklin. Why do we have so many mass shootings now? In the 1980’s there was a budget shortfall. Mental health Institutions of were shuttered. No law will ever prevent these horrors, as evidenced by NYC, Chicago, DC. They will only increase as law abiding citizens are denied their right to self defense. Police are under no legal obligation to protect you.

  10. Most democrats fear guns because they fear the training and THEY loath everything in the constitution. Being ‘pro-gun control’ is nothing more than being ignorant ….or a politician building his base with ignorant supporters.

Even if the gun show background check comes into reality, the shootings will continue until such time responsible citizens realize that we are living among psychotic killers on pharmaceutical drugs and we are not safe….therefore, carry your weapon at all times and watch your surroundings. Then and only then, a shooter can be neutralized and of course….it will never be the number one story on mainstream TV when a legal gun owner saves many lives.

Teachers and students….get armed ! Why do you think the U.S. sends thousands of hardcore weapons to citizens in other countries but want to take yours? Because a tyrant cannot afford to arm his own people.

  11. The phrase ” as a former weapons instructor in the U S Navy” is supposed to inoculate this guy against our scrutiny. But keep in mind that in every tyranny that disarmed its populace, those who carried out the act were trained and guided by “weapons instructors” of some sort. Furthermore, and I pray that this will not be misinterpreted, and many, many of those who served in our armed forces did so out of a genuine sense of patriotic duty and love of our country. But there clearly are others who in wartime, served less voluntarily in the draft, and during peacetime, to obtain benefits, e.g., under the GI Bill. I do not personally question any particular person’s motives. But a possibly useful test of someone’s true oath-sworn dedication to the Constitution is how they behave, not when they are in pursuit of an enlistment or a commission, but rather after military service, when the benefits thereof are no longer in play. All I am saying here is that those who seek to legitimize themselves during a pursuit against any of our constitutionally protected rights should not be given the slightest credence simply because of prior service.

  12. Obama is now suggesting a full blown gun confiscation, according to Infowars, besides their push for a background check for everyone, even though Obama (with a stroke of the pen) can destroy a hospital in Afghanistan without blinking an eye, but of course refuses to allow a full blown background check on himself ! We know nothing about this guy….and with the stroke of a pen, he could easily start an all out civil war in America. We are in some very dangerous times…..

    1. Just remember Solzenitchen (spelling), when he wrote about how pissed they were for not fighting back when they came for the guns. Next time they came they were taken to the camp. Better to smash a gun grabbers face in, or stick him in the eye with a red hot poker, than to meekly allow themselves to be disarmed by those goons, they lamented belatedly. They wished they had given them their guns one bullet at a time when they had the chance. Those who fail to learn from history….. You know the rest. Everyday is a good day to die, no one gets out of here alive.

  13. “If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” Samuel Adams

I need say nothing more other than, I will maintain my Oath. That ‘oath,’ holds to a much higher responsibility that that of a mere promise.

  14. This discussion revolves around the United States and is fit and proper.

I would like to suggest that as a country our foreign policy should also
‘impose’ the 2nd Amendment on countries that we provide financial aid to.

NO foreign aid to ANY country that does not provide the equivalent of our 2nd to
its citizens. Our financial assistance should only go to a foreign
government AFTER it has allowed and supported the arming of its

This country would not be where it is today without the 2nd and the sooner we
realize that the better off the world will be. (Sanctuary cities take note.)

Can anyone imagine how this would
change the Middle East countries. The ‘refugees’ would be able to fight
back rather than just escape to another country. The rest (read mostly
WEST) would not have to support these fleeing souls, they would be able to take
back their own country from their dictators – just as we will soon have to do

    Some famous dudes had this to say;
“The rights of neutrality will only be respected when they are defended by an
adequate power. A nation, despicable by its weakness, forfeits even the
privilege of being neutral.” —Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 11

Words of Andrew Jackson, “The brave man inattentive to his duty, is worth little more to his country, than the coward who deserts her in the hour of danger.”

  15. Blinded by the fraudulent deceptions for too long,It is going to be a forced march to get everyone educated fast enough. We have a small window of oportunitity Everyone in the freedom movement must spread the knowledge fast, don’t waste time on those who don’t believe,,spend the time on the ones who know something is wrong but don’t know what it is.
