MARINES, WELCOME TO OATH KEEPERS
As Marines, you are part of an unbroken chain of defenders of liberty and of our Republic that stretches all the way back to the American Revolution.
Here at Oath Keepers, you will find many brother Devil Dogs, both current serving and veterans. Four Marines sit on the Oath Keepers National Board of Directors: Rand Cardwell – a Scout Sniper veteran (who’s son is a current serving Scout Sniper); Jay Stang (son of the late, great anti-communist firebrand and radio host, Alan Stang) who also serves as our Texas Chapter President; David Rivers -Vietnam combat vet who serves as our General Counsel; and Franklin Shook (aka “Elias Alias”) – also a Vietnam combat vet who serves as our site Editor and Montana Chapter President. Other Marines serve in our state chapter leadership, such as Vietnam combat vet Steve Homan, our Nebraska Vice President.
For me, the Marine Corps is the epitome of all for which the United States stands. Duty and honor to the Constitution, as written, creating a system under which a Nation of Sovereign States are governed by a Sovereign people bound by the freedom to act and take responsibility for those acts. A group of individuals making up a whole, sworn and dedicated to the preservation of the American way of life so help us God.
- David Rivers. Marine Infantry, Vietnam Combat Veteran
The mission of Oath Keepers is to honor the oath we all took to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and to restore the Founders Republic.
That mission is dedicated to the memory of World War II Marine John Adams, who, at the age of 16, lied about his age to join the Marine Corps to fight the Japanese. His enlistment date was December 10, 1941 – just three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He fought at Iwo Jima. Read more about him here.
John Adams. Patriot, Marine, and Oath Keeper Extraordinaire
From Lexington Green and Concord Bridge, through every conflict (”from the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli,” and from the Sands of Iwo Jima to the mountains of Afghanistan), up to today, American fighting men have fought, bled, and died to preserve our liberty. Now it is your watch. Now it is your turn to guard our Republic and the liberty of the American people.
Marine, you have a duty to make sure that all the pain and sacrifice of Marines before you were not in vain. You know what they went through. Will you let it all have been for naught? Will you let domestic enemies destroy our Constitution? We know the answer is “hell no!” and “forbid it all-mighty God!” And we agree.
It is our mission to help you keep and honor your oath, by teaching you about the Constitution we all swore an oath to defend, so you will know what is right and wrong, and where the constitutional lines are that you must not cross. We know you have courage and honor. We have seen it in person. The only question is whether you have the knowledge to know what is the right course. Will you know when an order is unlawful and must be refused, because it violates the Constitution? Or will you unwittingly follow unlawful orders because you did not know they were unlawful?
In the weeks ahead, we will be building an online Oath Keepers academy that will use original sources to teach you about our Constitution and our heritage and history of liberty, so you will have the knowledge to know the right course in any situation. We encourage you to check back often for updates, and we encourage you to sign up for our free email alerts.
But let’s begin by discussing the right to bear arms, and the current assault on that right.
DEFENDING THE SECOND AMENDMENT AND THE NATURAL RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS
Back in 2009, when Oath Keepers was launched as an organization, one of the first things we did was issue our Declaration of Orders We (active duty Oath Keepers) Will Not Obey. You can read the full declaration here.
Order #1 was:
1. We will NOT obey any order to disarm the American people.
The attempt to disarm the people on April 19, 1775 was the spark of open conflict in the American Revolution. That vile attempt was an act of war, and the American people fought back in justified, righteous self-defense of their natural rights. Any such order today would also be an act of war against the American people, and thus an act of treason. We will not make war on our own people, and we will not commit treason by obeying any such treasonous order.
Nor will we assist, or support any such attempt to disarm the people by other government entities, either state or federal.
In addition, we affirm that the purpose of the Second Amendment is to preserve the military power of the people so that they will, in the last resort, have effective final recourse to arms and to the God of Hosts in the face of tyranny. Accordingly, we oppose any and all further infringements on the right of the people to keep and bear arms. In particular we oppose a renewal of the misnamed “assault-weapons” ban or the enactment of H.R. 45 (which would register and track gun owners like convicted pedophiles).
We wrote that back in 2009, because we knew that the domestic enemies of the right to bear arms would never quit, and we knew they would take advantage of some future horrific shooting in a “gun free zone” (disarmed victim zone) to justify even more violations of our right to bear arms. And that is just what they did in the wake of the recent Newtown, CT shooting. In particular, we knew they would again attempt to pass a so-called “assault weapons ban” on military style semi-automatic rifles, a magazine capacity ban, and/or some scheme of registration of guns or gun owners. And that is exactly what they did. Fortunately, such attempts at the federal level have failed – so far. But several states, including New York, Connecticut, Maryland, and Colorado, have passed state laws that grossly violate the Second Amendment.
Shortly after the Newtown shooting, Oath Keepers Founder, Stewart Rhodes, issued his Personal Pledge of Resistance Against Any Attempt to Disarm Us By Means of an “Assault Weapons Ban.” We encourage you to read that pledge, which provides important information on the intent of the Founders, and the core purpose of the Second Amendment – preserving the military capacity and capability of the American people.
Oath Keepers, as an organization, also issued our Molon Labe Pledge, which can be read here.
Could you be called upon to enforce unconstitutional laws or unconstitutional executive orders that violate the right to bear arms? Think it won’t happen? It happened during Hurricane Katrina:
THE GUN CONFISCATION DURING HURRICANE KATRINA
Sadly, both current serving police and National Guardsmen obeyed unconstitutional orders to disarm peaceable American citizens who were simply trying to defend themselves and their property. These weren’t looters. These were the good guys. But the anti-gun Mayor and Police Chief of New Orleans put out an order that they were going to take all the guns, no one (no mere citizen) would be able to be armed. And those unlawful orders were enforced. The little old lady who was tackled in her kitchen and disarmed (see above video) was tackled by a California Highway Patrol Officer who had been federalized and brought to New Orleans to “help.” The NRA later won and injunction against any further enforcement of that unlawful order, but that didn’t help the people who had already had their rights violated, and who had been left defenseless against the violent gangs and looters who were running wild in the streets.
Fortunately, there were current serving who still understood the Constitution who refused to follow such orders. One example from Katrina was Staff Sgt. Joshua May, of the Utah National Guard. Sgt. May’s entire unit refused to participate in any gun disarmament during their deployment to Katrina. Here is an important interview with Sgt. May:
