When I viewed the video above, I was reminded of a stanza from a poem by Robert Frost. The poem is Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening. The stanza is this:
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
But I have promises to keep. Not only the Federal government, but also State and local governments have made promises to their constituencies. Be it pension programs, medical insurance, high salaries, welfare programs, or what have you, politicians at all levels of government have made promises. It is becoming clearer to people who actually notice, that those promises will not be kept. Detroit is going through bankruptcy and has slashed pension programs. Yes, it is to those already retired and receiving pensions. Detroit simply does not have the money to pay the promised sums. The politicians who swept into the various offices made promises, that brought them into office. It is usual for politicians to lie. Am I being redundant when referring to lying politicians?
Many communities and States are in financial difficulties, because they promised to much. They killed the goose that laid the golden egg. Detroit is dying. Soon communities like Desert Hot Springs, CA, will die. It is only a matter of time before the bill for the promised benefit comes due. Nothing is free in this world. You can pay as you go, or leave the tab for your children and grandchildren to pay, which is what the Baby Boomers have done. Of course, the bill is never paid in full. It can’t be paid. The bill is higher than the public’s ability to pay.
It has all been a scam. Obamacare. Does anyone really believe it can remain solvent? Medicare is almost broke. Social Security is not far behind, yet those receiving the benefits say “Don’t touch”.
When is a promise not a promise? When it is made by government. The Constitution refers to our unalienable rights, yet the government is always adding new restrictions on our rights, promising us safety in return. There are those promises again. Promises made by government are the most apt to be broken of any promises. History has shown us time and time again how governments change the rules to increase their power. Yet, people trust government. It is different this time, they tell themselves. Really? Be honest with yourself. Your childrens future depends on your honesty. You can lie to them and tell them over, and over again, that this is a free country, but you know it isn’t. Free Speech Zones? That’s freedom? NSA spying on us. That’s freedom? Indefinite detention. That’s freedom?
Oh. I’m sorry. You are one of those who never does anything wrong. You have never broken a law. But, if your neighbor isn’t free, can you be free? Sure, you can be free to choose what to watch on TV, but what about your neighbor? Many have condemned the German people for believing in Hitler; of following him. Just where do you stand on the President being judge, jury and executioner of those he alone determines are enemies of America?
As you sit in your easy chair, or play golf, or shuffleboard, retired as you are, stop and think: Will my retirement check arrive next month? Will the government keep the promise they made to me? Just a thought to keep in mind.
