The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the right to bear arms, is the most important amendment of all, according to Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon Jr. who spoke to the Georgetown GOP Patriots Club on Monday evening…
“I feel the Second Amendment represents the most important right, the right that protects all others,” Cannon said. “The United States’ success is based on the fact that we have an armed citizenry.” …
Cannon went on to say that there is a minority of people “out there” who would like to take all guns away from Americans.
“We’ve fallen asleep at the will of a small group with ill motives,” Cannon said. “In any given situation there is a shrill vocal minority of people dedicated to a cause who take advantage of people who have a live and let live attitude. They want to change things that are impossible to turn around.”
He also mentioned a group called Oath Keepers, but did not claim any connection with it.
Oath Keepers is a non-partisan association of current and formerly serving military, reserves, National Guard, veterans, peace officers, and fire fighters, according to their website, www.oathkeepers.org.
The group is dedicated to fulfilling the oath they swore, with the support of like minded citizens who take an oath to stand with them, to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
The Post and Courier reported that Cannon recently vowed to ignore any proposed gun-control measures he deems unconstitutional, joining a growing chorus of lawmen across the country against proposed firearm restrictions.
Cannon’s comments came one day after President Barack Obama unveiled the most sweeping proposals for curbing gun violence in two decades.
