City of Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana: On Thursday January 31, 2013, talk radio station KMMS in Bozeman featured Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin on Henry Kriegel’s morning show. Henry Kriegel is a “recovering Republican” Tea Party activist who was influenced by Ron Paul’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns and has become one of Bozeman’s most effective activists for freedom. He is a Constitutionalist who seeks to restore the public’s respect for the Montana and United States Constitutions. A firm believer in individual liberty as enshrined in both Constitutions, Henry Kriegel has for years hosted a regular talk show on KMMS, as well as organizing local area freedom-related events.

On his show of January 31, 2013, Henry responded to the nation’s debate about the Second Amendment and its relationship to America’s tradition of private gun ownership by inviting Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin to come onto Henry’s show.  From the KMMS archive we can now listen to recorded action on that show. Please hit this link to KMMS and listen to the audio files of the show.

On that page, above the three audio segments, is the following description of the show by Henry Kriegel -

Sheriff Brian Gootkin affirmed his support for gun rights on this Thursday’s show.  Gootkin also said the focus of the President’s 23 Executive Orders and discussion is a distraction from the real issue behind the shooting massacre in Sandy Hook, Connecticut—mental illness.  He will be in Washington, DC to testify about how western Montana law enforcement and mental health communities have responded to mental health issues in our community.

Gootkin spoke about his support of the US and Montana Constitutions.  Gootkin indicated that the Montana Sheriffs and Peach Officers Association, of which he serves as vice president, will be issuing a statement early next week affirming these rights.  While he was a little less clear about what he would do if the federal government engaged in any gun grabbing, I and several listeners urged Gootkin, as the highest law enforcement officer in the county, to stand strong in defense of our 2nd amendment rights.

Pete, a frequent caller, articulated the concerns of many listeners.  We don’t trust the current Administration.  Pete referred to the DHS Secretary Jean Sibelius’ report just one week before the first nationwide Tea Parties in April 2009 which indicated that the federal government considered returning combat veterans, the recently unemployed and right-to-life advocates as extremist threats.

If the economy took a rapid turn for the worst, if resources became scarce and distribution of resources difficult, many, particularly those in large cities would face an uncertain world.  Just what the federal government might do in that scenario is a concern to many.  Having witnessed what Obama supporters tried to do in August 2009 by instigating violence when the President held his town hall meeting in Belgrade, I’m concerned as well.

As my home for the past twelve years has been in the same valley as Bozeman, I personally know Henry and several of the citizens who called into this show, such as “Pete” and “Clint”. Their questions for Sheriff Gootkin were echoed nicely by Henry’s encouragement for the Sheriff to take citizens’ concerns seriously.  Because the national debate about gun control is now directly hammering down upon Sheriffs across the nation, whose County citizens are acutely concerned about un-Constitutional laws designed to “infringe” Americans’ right to keep and bear arms, we here at Oath Keepers have been watching closely as various peace officers weigh in on the topic.  My question for readers here is this:

How would you rate Sheriff Gootkin’s knowledge of, and willingness to enforce for the people, the U.S. Constitution and especially the Second Amendment? Do you feel that he is fully aware of, and informed about, the true intent of the Founders regarding the Militia of the several States and every citizen’s full, unalienable right to keep and bear arms?

Salute!

I am a Montana resident and a constitutionlist myself and I need to ask just how constitutional is this sheriff? Is he trying to stop the illegal court system from taking away our birthrights, example, the right to face your accuser or do you use CIs or does he act on secret tips, does he arrest judges who tell a jury “you must decide within the law?” Where does he stand on our illegal nationwide license system that has ZERO to do with commerce and was put in place by the fed gov’t?
How constitutional are you sheriff because here in Meagher counry my sheriff is NOT constitutional but he sure like to give the perception of it as I have spoken with him and I get the usual police bull like “it must be my interpetation of the const which is total horse crap as our founding fathers were well known wordsmiths and that kinda talk makes me want to remove him from U.S. soil, how about the problem in the Livingston courtroom oathkeepers ran, where does he stand on how unconstitutional Montana courts really are? Let’s here it from a citizen who know the const. you police are saying is legit are total lies and you guys are not our king and rulers so let’s talk more about just the white wash by law enforcement about how const they say they are but are NOT

He needs the Constitutional Sheriffs classes. He is on his way, but his knowledge of what his own oath of office and state constitution requires of him needs work, let alone the Constitution of the United States. But he is further ahead then some. It would help him if he had someone (if he is too busy) to learn from Oath Keepers and CSPOA (which he would probably trust more since it is other Sheriffs) and come back and start teaching his office their legitimate duty, and it is NOT assisting the feds.

Sebilius runs HHS and will be the main driver of Obamacare, yet another violation of the Constitution; DHS is run by Janet Napolitano, former AZ Gov, who approved the infamous report that posits that veterans etc were potential right wing terrorists. In either case they function as Commisars in BHO’s Politboro.

The MSPOA does not support our 2nd amendment rights. They lobbied against at least 4 of our pro 2nd amendment bills in the Mt. Legislature

I think Sheriff Gootkin might like to explain where he was during this outrageous show of force by the EPA and FBI. Talk is cheap, Sheriff Brian Gootkin.
