City of Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana: On Thursday January 31, 2013, talk radio station KMMS in Bozeman featured Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin on Henry Kriegel’s morning show. Henry Kriegel is a “recovering Republican” Tea Party activist who was influenced by Ron Paul’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns and has become one of Bozeman’s most effective activists for freedom. He is a Constitutionalist who seeks to restore the public’s respect for the Montana and United States Constitutions. A firm believer in individual liberty as enshrined in both Constitutions, Henry Kriegel has for years hosted a regular talk show on KMMS, as well as organizing local area freedom-related events.
On his show of January 31, 2013, Henry responded to the nation’s debate about the Second Amendment and its relationship to America’s tradition of private gun ownership by inviting Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin to come onto Henry’s show. From the KMMS archive we can now listen to recorded action on that show. Please hit this link to KMMS and listen to the audio files of the show.
On that page, above the three audio segments, is the following description of the show by Henry Kriegel -
Sheriff Brian Gootkin affirmed his support for gun rights on this Thursday’s show. Gootkin also said the focus of the President’s 23 Executive Orders and discussion is a distraction from the real issue behind the shooting massacre in Sandy Hook, Connecticut—mental illness. He will be in Washington, DC to testify about how western Montana law enforcement and mental health communities have responded to mental health issues in our community.
Gootkin spoke about his support of the US and Montana Constitutions. Gootkin indicated that the Montana Sheriffs and Peach Officers Association, of which he serves as vice president, will be issuing a statement early next week affirming these rights. While he was a little less clear about what he would do if the federal government engaged in any gun grabbing, I and several listeners urged Gootkin, as the highest law enforcement officer in the county, to stand strong in defense of our 2nd amendment rights.
Pete, a frequent caller, articulated the concerns of many listeners. We don’t trust the current Administration. Pete referred to the DHS Secretary Jean Sibelius’ report just one week before the first nationwide Tea Parties in April 2009 which indicated that the federal government considered returning combat veterans, the recently unemployed and right-to-life advocates as extremist threats.
If the economy took a rapid turn for the worst, if resources became scarce and distribution of resources difficult, many, particularly those in large cities would face an uncertain world. Just what the federal government might do in that scenario is a concern to many. Having witnessed what Obama supporters tried to do in August 2009 by instigating violence when the President held his town hall meeting in Belgrade, I’m concerned as well.
As my home for the past twelve years has been in the same valley as Bozeman, I personally know Henry and several of the citizens who called into this show, such as “Pete” and “Clint”. Their questions for Sheriff Gootkin were echoed nicely by Henry’s encouragement for the Sheriff to take citizens’ concerns seriously. Because the national debate about gun control is now directly hammering down upon Sheriffs across the nation, whose County citizens are acutely concerned about un-Constitutional laws designed to “infringe” Americans’ right to keep and bear arms, we here at Oath Keepers have been watching closely as various peace officers weigh in on the topic. My question for readers here is this:
How would you rate Sheriff Gootkin’s knowledge of, and willingness to enforce for the people, the U.S. Constitution and especially the Second Amendment? Do you feel that he is fully aware of, and informed about, the true intent of the Founders regarding the Militia of the several States and every citizen’s full, unalienable right to keep and bear arms?
