Reflections About Wyoming’s Apocalypse Bill

Editor’s note:

Oath Keepers senses that the world’s economic situation is tentative at best, that a mood of war-mongering prevails in Washington D.C., that world-wide political upheaval is a possibility, and that natural causes could also come into play in our immediate future.

Oath Keepers has long suggested to America’s Veterans community that being prepared for an economic collapse, or other severe disruption of services, is to be a primary focus for patriots. We are developing a website called Operation Sleeping Giant, and we focus on four main thrusts of preventive measures recommended for all Veterans. Our hope is that the Veterans community will help prepare their good neighbors in their local neighborhoods and areas.

The four areas we stress as important and even crucial are:

1 – Food, fuel, emergency medical, and communications security and independence (and general preparedness) – as individuals, within local veterans organization chapters, neighborhood mutual aid societies, churches, co-ops, farmers markets, and at the town, county and state levels. As a start, follow the advice on http://www.providentliving.org/ (you don’t need to be LDS to learn from their experience in food storage and preparedness, or to use their canning facilities). Grow gardens. Support your local farmers. Fight any regulation that would limit your ability to grow your own food. Why is food first? Because it is the hardest to improvise, and it is a great weakness of modern man, who, with few exceptions, no longer stores up for bad times. Ditto for fuel and medical supplies. And when it comes to communications, we must have in place an alternative system, such as HAM Radio, so if/when the internet comes down (or is taken down) we can still communicate (for example, if each VFW Hall had a HAM Radio, that would provide a state-wide network).

2 -  Physical security and Independence – again as individuals, neighborhoods, veterans organization chapters, towns, counties and states, to include forming neighborhood watches; mutual aid associations; a volunteer sheriff’s posse (staffed by self-supplied volunteers but under direct command of the sheriff); and county militias established by county ordinances but staffed by self-supplied and self-funded volunteers (as is done in volunteer fire departments all over this nation); state defense forces under command of the governor; and ultimately, a true state militia, established by state statute, capable of “repelling invasions” (using the research and model bills of Dr. Edwin Vieira). As for training, a great first step for the newbie or for those who are rusty would be to attend the Project Appleseed rifle instruction program, offered for a pittance in every state by traveling volunteer instructors. See www.appleseedinfo.org for details.

3 –  Economic security and independence – as individuals and communities, including barter networks, use of silver and gold as real money, and sound money bills at the county and state levels (as Utah just passed). This would also include each of us having a “liberty trade” – something you can do even in a very localized, back-to-basics economy, and we must support and build resilient local economies that can weather hard times. We must have an alternative to the fiat money system in place when it collapses, so we can resist what the globalists have in store for us next. See www.alt-market.com for details.

4 –  State sovereignty and nullification of unconstitutional federal laws and actions. Veterans must support only sheriffs, local and state legislators, and governors who have the knowledge, courage, and integrity to keep their oaths. To vote for an oath breaker, is to become an oath breaker. We must enforce the bounds of the Constitution and defend the powers reserved to the states and to the people (see the Tenth Amendment) by supporting state sovereignty resolutions and nullification of unconstitutional laws. See http://www.tenthamendmentcenter.com/. Likewise, we must defend the inherent power of the jury to judge the law as well as the facts and to acquit even in the face of the law (jury nullification). See www.fija.org. And eventually we must kick the bums out of DC and replace them with citizen legislators, as GOOOH recommends. See http://goooh.com/

The following story by Reuters brings to light two perceptions which are now prevalent in America. One is the perception that all is well and anyone who worries about impending disaster is a “conspiracy theorist” or worse. That is the popular view promoted by those in political power who have a vested interest in erecting a military-police state in America. The other perception is one of calm preparedness no matter what the masses are led to believe.

Brandon Smith keeps an eye on the economic problems confronting us today and publishes often here at Oath Keepers. Oath Keepers has always appreciated the works of Constitutional scholar Dr. Edwin Vieira, Jr., and film-maker James Jaeger. Oath Keepers honors the old motto: “Be Prepared”.  Bear that in mind while reading about the Wyoming legislature’s bout with a “doomsday bill”.

(Reuters) – In a sign of rising consumer confidence prevailing over go-it-alone pessimism in the Cowboy State, Wyoming lawmakers on Tuesday narrowly defeated a “doomsday bill” to help the state prepare for a total collapse of the U.S. government and economy.

The bill, rejected on a 30-27 vote by the state House of Representatives, would have allocated $16,000 for a panel of legislators and emergency managers to study various measures, including a new state-issued currency, for handling a range of apocalyptic scenarios.

The bill’s chief sponsor, Republican Representative David Miller, originally had sought $32,000 to fund the task force, but the Joint Appropriations Committee later cut that amount in half. Republicans control both houses of the state Legislature.

House members on Monday had given the bill their initial backing after striking a “poison pill” amendment that mockingly asked whether Wyoming should purchase its own aircraft carrier and fighter jets.

“I guess a lot of people think if you’re trying to prepare for a disaster, it makes you seem crazy,” co-sponsor Kendell Kroeker said. “I was interested in it mainly because I don’t think there’s any harm in being well-prepared.”

Supporters of the legislation had cited recent global economic turmoil and political unrest as reasons to plan for a range of hypothetical worst-case scenarios.

The bill would have funded contingency planning to guide Wyoming through “a situation in which the federal government has no effective power or authority over the people of the United States,” as well as disruptions in food and energy supplies.

One option the bill contemplated in the event of a rapid collapse of the U.S. dollar was “the ability to quickly provide an alternative currency.”

Good heavens! Be prepared? This is America, where life is beautiful all day long. Yes, they may be coming to take us away, haha, to the funny farm where life is beautiful all day long. Oh, wait a minute, I think we HAVE been taken away.

I am saddened that our legislators did not take this legislation more seriously. I wonder if they will consider the authority of their office to still be in effect and enforceable during a total governmental collapse, absent support of their constituency — constituency for whom they did not deign to be prepared to continue to support in such an event.

No matter: we are prepared with or without the help of our state government. Wyoming itself grows some hard-bitten individuals, who lack the capacity to suffer fools and clowns…and we have long memories, for better or for worse.
