Libyan Opposition Leader: Military Siding with People

A former Libyan army officer and head of a leading opposition group says he knows of growing defections among Libya’s military not just by individuals, but in some cases, entire units. Ibrahim Abdulaziz Sahad is the Secretary-General of the National Front for the Salvation of Libya, or NFSL, which was organized in in October 1981 by a group of former military officers, diplomats and businessmen with one goal – to end the regime of Colonel Moammar Gadhafi. He spoke to VOA’s Cecily Hilleary from his base in the United States.

Cecily: Mr. Sahad. You are a former member of the Libyan army and the Air Force. We are hearing reports of real atrocity committed by the Libyan army against protesters. And we are also hearing reports of members of military defecting. What is going on?

Sahad: The scenario started. In Benghazi, the demonstrators could not be in a peaceful situation until a unit from the army moved and took over the barracks which contains another battalion of Gaddafi security. That battalion used to shoot against the demonstrators, used to send mercenaries, used to do all kinds of harm [against] the demonstrators – even the inhabitants of Benghazi.

But when that army unit moved and took over that barracks, Benghazi started to breathe. It is also, in many other places, military units joining the people, like in Misrata, the Air Force Academy joined the people. Also some units in Misrata, some units in Az-Zawiyah.

Why are we going(?) to North Africa, and who knows where else? Why are we in the Middle East and Central Asia with the U.S. military, and our blood, and our dollars? Our country is being destroyed daily with more and more Unconstitutional policies within the U.S.A. I have little interest in who is rioting in the streets of Tunis, Beirut, Cairo, Athens, Bahrain, etc. Is that my responsibility? Are they not sovereign countries? I want to know and focus on what is going on in America, THE country that I swore an oath to defend ITS Constitution.

It’s time to bring back the policies of George Washington and our other founding fathers. We need to dispense with the inmates in Washington D.C., and the “policy” makers at The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the rest of mainstream editorialized news who have a hard time reading the U.S. Constitution.

Would someone please explain to me why an “economically” and “financially” BANKRUPT country is running all over the world? We are printing over one trillion dollars per year to stay “afloat.”
I DON’T GET IT! But then I avoid taking an IQ test, since I am afraid what the results might be.

I didn’t swear an oath to the constitution of ANY OTHER country: NONE! ZERO!

So help me God.

This site is dedicated to the memory of John William Adams (1925-2006), Marine and Oath Keeper extraordinaire.

John Adams, at the age of 16, lied about his age to join the Marines so he could fight against Imperial Japan in the Pacific. His enlistment date was December 10, 1941, just three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor (see below). As a Marine rifleman, he fought the Japanese from island to island, across the pacific, including at Iwo Jima. We may have good men, but we never had better.

Until his death in 2006, he was a dedicated patriot who still took his oath to defend the Republic deadly serious. May God grant you the courage to do likewise.
