My Family history in the Navy

us_navy_logoMy uncle was in the Navy in the torpedo bombers in WWll, his brother was at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked.  I made up my mind to join the Navy when I was very young. The fastest route in, was I joined the Navy Reserve as a Junior in H.S. I took my oath in 1960. Upon graduation I went on Active Duty and was assigned to the USS Lester (DE-1022)in the Boston Naval Shipyard. In Nov. we left for GITMO for our Shakedown Cruise. Then back to Newport. We did a lot of ASW training out of Key West, Fl. I stood radar watches at Sea, was a YN3, Sea and Anchor Detail was Stb.Lookout, CPT’s Phone talker and my G.Q. STA. was Gunnery Control.

In 1962 we did UNITAS III, circumnavigating South America in 2 1/2 months. In Oct.we were off the coast of Ecuador when President Kennedy gave his speech telling Russia to get its Nuclear Missiles out of Cuba.  We went through the blockade and headed back to get our evaporators repaired as we had no fresh water on board. Our orders were to the blockade after repairs, but the job didn’t get done in time. On this cruise I also got a lifetime desire of an eight day cruise  on the USS Picuda (SS-382). In Sept. 1963 I was released from Active Duty.

Our youngest son is currently serving in the Navy as a Naval Aviator as is our Son in law. They both are USNA Grads class or 1992. Our son is an F-14 Tomcat Pilot with two tours in Iraq. He was also a graduate of Naval Weapons and training (Top Gun), and was an instructor with them for a year. This summer the Navy is sending him to get his PHD and then is going to teach at the Naval Acacemy.  Our son in law is a Naval Aviator a H60B Helocopter, and a graduate of the Naval War College in Newport, RI. I feel life was a complete circle as I was back to Newport for the first time in 45 years. It was a great experience again.

You and your family deserve our thanks for your service. I love how that sense of duty runs strong in families.

I have nothing but complete respect for this country and the men who fought our wars.
I am very respectful of the guys from WWll who gave there life for us.
We are losing 1500 men a day to old age and that was the figure ten years ago.
I was 18 in 1967 and after graduation from high school I went for the physical to
join, I ended up 4f from high blood pressure.
I took another physical a year later and the result was the same.
This web site gives me goose bumps when I read the testimonials.
God Bless our Republic. I remember the Pledge of Allegiance.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands One Nation Under God.
We are a Republic not a Democracy. Jefferson called a Democracy Rule by the Mob and that the 51 percent that elected someone that the 49 percent did not like was not what our founding fathers had in mind.
Even the Greeks had little respect for Democracy.
