The Oath Means More Now than Ever!

1st-calvary-div1st calvary div“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”

For many of us, we were very young when we first uttered those words. Myself, I was 17 years old in 1971 when I enlisted in the U.S. Army. I remember feverishly trying to correctly repeat the phrases as they were recited by the Officer administering the oath to a roomful of 100 or so new recruits before being scuttled off to Fort Polk, LA for BCT. Admittedly, I didn’t think too much about those words at the time.

After Vietnam, societal acceptance of veterans was at an all time low. We came home, stuffed uniforms, ribbons and spit shined boots into duffle bags and went on about the business of anonymity.

With the U.S. military’s resounding victory during the first Gulf War, it was if the dark cloud of animosity toward the veterans had been lifted. Like many of you, I lifted my head and again felt the pride of having once belonged to the greatest fraternity on the face of the earth.

“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic;

Those words mean more now than ever. We’re the goods guys, dammit. Our country is on a slippery slope. Our country needs us to live that oath, not just recite the words.

The Marines believe, “Once a Marine, Always a Marine”. That holds true for the rest of us too. A DD214 is a release from active duty, not loyalty to the oath.

    Thank you for taking that oath and and keeping it alive. We are Americans, this is “the land of the free and the home of the brave” because of brave and honorable Americans like you!

    We have been a beacon of light for other countries and their people all over the world for over 200 years. We must remain the country our founding fathers visualized and implemented under the watchful eye of God. In God We must TRUST!!

    There are dark clouds gathering and whittling away at our Constitution at lightening speed now. There is no time to waste. The fight for this country, its ideals, sovereignty and Constitution is at hand. Thank you for vowing to keep your oath!

    I remember your homecoming after Nam. I was never more ashamed of our country until now. What is happening in our government is disgraceful and I don’t understand why they are not being called out on the carpet about their recent decisions!
    Thank you for your sacrifice in Nam and know that we here will never give you that kind of reception. Welcome soldier.

    I never wore the uniform because of health reasons.Yet I too will be an oath keeper, even at the age of 81. It’s just the right thing to do.
