I still support and defend the Constitution

us_navy_logoWhen I enlisted in the Navy in 1963 I swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I, and most 17 year olds, didn’t really understand what that meant. But, over the years, I figured it out. There’s nothing to interpret, like the Constitution, it means what it says.

I, James William Doran, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; THAT’S NOT ENEMIES OF OUR COUNTRY OR ENEMIES OF OUR PEOPLE, BUT ENEMIES OF OUR CONSTITUTION – WHICH JUST HAPPENS TO INCLUDE THE FIRST TWO GROUPS. IT DOESN’T ONLY INCLUDE THOSE FOLKS WHO ARE TRYING TO DESTROY OUR CONSTITUTION FROM WITHOUT, BUT FROM WITHIN AS WELL.

that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; I WILL FOLLOW THE SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND, THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION. I WILL NOT SUBORN IT NOR WILL I DISGRACE IT.

and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. YES, I WILL OBEY THE ORDERS OF POTUS AND THOSE OFFICERS APPOINTED OVER ME, PROVIDED THOSE ORDERS DON’T CAUSE ME TO SUBORN OR DISGRACE OUR CONSTITUTION.

So help me God. THE ULTIMATE DECISION MAKER AND GUARDIAN.

When I retired from the Navy in 1983, the powers that be relieved me of a number of things. I had to give up my job, I had to turn in all functional government property and account for the non-functional government property. But there were two things that I was NOT relieved of, my oath to the support and defend the Constitution nor my promise (to the Chief Petty Officer who trained me) to take care of my sailors. Now it’s 26 more years under my belt, I still support and defend the Constitution, and taking care of my sailors has been expanded to include taking care of veterans, period.
