Tea Party protests tax policies

CHEYENNE — Close to 1,000 people rallied Saturday at the state Capitol to protest growth of federal power and in support of a variety of conservative causes.

“The federal government is completely out of control,” said Tom Hayes, who held a picket urging support of the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The 10th Amendment says, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

Hayes said, “That’s probably the main focus” of the protest.

“As far as we’re concerned that’s a legitimate concern,” he said. “The Constitution gives little power to the federal government.”

He said Congress and the Obama administration are eroding state power and increasing federal authority.

Vic Schrekhise agreed.

He sees such things as the distribution of economic recovery funds as part of that erosion.

“Why should the people of Wyoming pay for California mistakes?” Schrekhise said.

Lisa Ray of We the People said Gov. Dave Freudenthal “seems to think that if we the people demand” the 10th Amendment be enforced “it’s a fun exercise.

“The truth of the matter is we don’t really need the Legislature, and we don’t really need the governor to enforce the 10th Amendment.”

Ray also told the crowd, “I have to say unarmed revolution brings out the finest people.”

Pickets listed a variety of concerns including:

– Stop the cattle drive to socialism.

– Global warming is a sham.

– Say no to cap and trade.

– Can we bankrupt the country? Yes, we can.

Another theme promoted by the speakers was that the United States is a Christian nation.

Dave Freeman, Oath Keepers peace officer liaison and a retired Las Vegas Metro police sergeant, urged “putting on the whole armor of God.”

He led the crowd in prayer asking God to help remove misguided politicians and replace them with “God-fearing, freedom-loving” men and women.

Oath Keepers is an association of military personnel, veterans and peace officers who “swore to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, so help us God.”

Freeman administered the oath to the Constitution to the crowd.

“This is a brand that will stay on your heart the rest of your life,” he said.

State troopers who protect the Capitol and kept an eye of the rally estimated the crowd at between 700-1,000 people. They cautioned that there was a steady flow of people making an estimate difficult.

  1. When I gathered with Oath Keepers, as a total stranger to them all, on the weekend of April 19th, 2009, one of the first things which impressed me was the frequency with which I heard God’s name evoked and the number of times I witnessed statements supporting acknowledging God in all that is said & done and in the success of Oath Keepers in accomplishing their purposes. I’m thankful for Dave Freeman and for Chauncey Normandin, David Gillie and Garrett Lear, as well as Ernest Guy Cunningham, all of whom held forth the name of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. True Constitutional Patriots can serve no other king. There can be no success for Oath Keepers, apart from a careful examination and consideration of God’s will & a seeking of HIS blessing in all that is said & done.

  2. As a veteran of the U.S. Army and a Wiccan, I hold my oath to defend my country as dear as I hold my Creator, my life and my family. There are many Wiccans who love our country as much as I do and have served/are serving in the Armed Forces. I will do my best to spread the word to my Brothers and Sisters-In-Arms, no matter what Faith they may be. My oath never expired and my willingness to defend my country hasn’t either.

  3. I appreciate what Oath Keepers is doing and where it is going. It is exciting to know that a movement exists like this and that people understand why it should exist. In a time of extreme Constitutional violation, Oath Keepers is essential in reminding us all that it is important to honor and keep the Oath to the Constitution. Let us also keep close the message and mission of Oath Keepers. It is not a faith based organization nor is it affiliated with any political party. It is about the Oath. Plain and simple. Keep it!

  4. Look, folks, I GET the idea that the military should not obey illegal orders. But the military is NOT a co-equal branch of the government. Thus, the military has no business interpreting the meaning of the Constitution or organizing itself to act in a political way. None whatsoever.

The Constitution is to be interpreted by the courts. Laws are to be made by elected representatives of the people. And the people ALONE should be the “guardians of the republic.”

The people do not need military “protectors” to step in and save them from themselves. The people can defend the republic without the help of strutting colonels in mirrored sunglasses who decide to make themselves into the moral guardians of everybody else.

Movements like this always appear to be “well-meaning.” They always present themselves as the “honorable men” who will step in and rescue the “decadent” and deformed republic from the “dirty politicians.” But doing that is the role of civilians.

Organizing the military to take on the role of “putting things right” is a bad, bad, bad idea. This is the road to fascism.

  5. Edwin McKinney stated “It is not a faith based organization nor is it affiliated with any political party. It is about the Oath. Plain and simple.”

Tho I would agree it doesn’t have a “denominational” bias or preference, the foundation upon which the constitution & the bill of rights is based is indeed “faith” based, in as much as it acknowledges God, The Creator. Historic documents abound which show that this nation was founded not by Wiccans nor by Buddhists nor by Taoists nor by animists but by people who believed & practiced Christian principles.

Remove “faith” and you remove the foundation on which the founding documents were written. Remove the foundation and the rest falls.

I have long been concerned at the efforts which have for decades been made to remove God from our courts, our government, our schools …

No God, no hope. Know God. Know Hope !!

The military is not a branch of government, and the military is not a conscious entity but an organization of conscious Americans. Military men and women have the same citizenship responsibilities as civilians to read, study, and understand their constitution so that they can make proper choices where the fate of their nation and their families is concerned. They are not robots to do the bidding of the unrighteous, and they have not given up but a small amount of citizenship to serve their brothers and sisters, so neither are they slaves.

Anonymous also said: “Organizing the military to take on the role of “putting things right” is a bad, bad, bad idea. This is the road to fascism.”

Lack of historical knowledge and the willingness to only think one or two thoughts deep about issues of such great import as our constitution and freedom of choice does harm to Americans because even the thoughtless have followers. Some level of fascism has existed since the original constitution, and it has increased at an increasing rate so that it is intolerable today. Having military people who think is not the road to fascism. The road to fascism is paved with thoughtless military people, thoughtless civilians, and traitors. Playing ostrich will not change reality.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Stewart, for establishing an organization so important that it should have existed with the beginning of our nation.

  7. The Oath Keepers information needs to get out to ALL police departments, sheriff department, and all military personnel! After seeing what happened in New Orleans, during Katrina, it worry’s me, that the military will follow orders, as they have been trained to do, and come after us for standing up for our rights. The sheriff department across this country has more power to protect us and the constitution than I ever realized! But do they know that? Do they know they CAN arrest federal agents who illegally go after citizens? If not, we must impress upon them the importance of their oath! I’m so glad to hear of you’re organization. thank you from the bottom of my heart!

  8. You know that it is a small percentage right now and hopefully growing that will be on the side of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. It will be like our founding fathers opposing the British all over again! The 2nd Revolutionary War is about to begin. All it will take is a false flag event or financial colapse or something else that will force martial law upon us. When it happens, it will be the bloodiest War to ever be fought on this Earth. The American Patriot will not give up til dead and the brain dead globalist army will fight like a dumb animal til dead. Unfortuantely, most of those brain dead globalist soldiers will be former US citizens. The day they shoot at their first Patriot defending the US Constitution makes them enemy of the United States Of America. As soon as the first soldier shoots at a Patriot defending the US Constitution, Every officer and government official supporting that shot is enemy of the United States of America. They may have already shot that first shot or supported that first shot and they may already be guilty of treason. When that war starts, then it will be official, the now US Government will no longer be the US Government. They will be the Globalist Government and the real US Government will be those defending the US Constitution. It will not only be a Revolutionary War but also a Civil War all in one. Every US Citizen right now needs to make a decision. Are you a US Citizen or a Global Citizen of the United Nations? You need to pick a side, for there will be no in between.
